ELE Interview: A Day In The Life Of Viola Virtamo – Photographer, Graphic Designer and Cookbook Author

Gooseberry bundt cakes, buttermilk honey buns, strawberry rhubarb pies…Viola Virtamo’s beautiful food images leap of the pages of her delicious blog, Nordic Violet. Digging a little deeper we were fascinated to find out that this Finnish creative is a fully self-taught photographer, self-taught graphic designer and self-taught cook.

We are inspired by how Viola has created a dream life for herself based around her talent and passion. We chat with her to find out a little more about what a typical day looks like for this full-time creative.

My Morning Routine

I’ve always loved slow mornings and late breakfasts. But then this summer my life changed when I got a little puppy into my life. And she also turned my morning routines upside down! Now I wake up at 7am every morning, but even though I expected to hate that, I’ve gotten used to it pretty quickly. It actually feels good to have a long walk in the fresh air in the middle of quiet nature, maybe even see the sunrise and then enjoy a fresh smoothie or a cup of tea and start the workday early. That means I’ve done a lot by lunch time!

My During The Day Routine

I’m a bit of a workaholic, so I’m used to working most of the hours during the day. But what makes my life easier and less stressful is making lists. A lot of lists. I’m a list person! I love writing to-do lists and then striking through the things I’ve done. That’s also the way my mind stays organised and I can concentrate on one thing at a time. In my life, every workday is different. Sometimes I have photoshoots for clients or for my instagram, sometimes I might sit the whole day in my home office working on a book layout. Sometimes I might have meetings. Usually I have a filling salad for lunch, maybe with roasted vegetables or something like that! After hours of working, I always have a 1-1.5 hour long walk with my dog (no matter if the sun shines or it’s raining). It’s so good for both my body and mind! During the weekends I try to have more time for relaxing things like catching up with friends or travelling to the countryside to my cottage.

My Evening Routine

I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I work a lot in the evenings too! But I also try to relax by cooking. For dinner I always make something that needs more effort than my lunch salads. Especially during autumn and winter I love to eat something comforting like pastas, stews cooked long in the oven or warming spicy curries. Then I lay on the sofa with my dog, watch tv, maybe even light some candles and try to have at least a short moment for relaxing. I would love to read more books, but that’s something I need to work on to get in to my daily routine!
